P1(U21) Explain different ideas for an original media product based on a client brief

In this coursework I am going to create and pitch ideas for a new online based music magazine for North London. For this I will come up with three ideas for a magazine- each comprising of venues, artists and up and coming talent within north London. As I want my ideas to be original and authentic. I plan to do primary research such as attending open mic nights at various different venues that host up and coming artists.

The explicit demands are what the brief is specifically asking of you, this includes;

  • making a front cover and a double page spread
  • the magazine must be for NORTH LONDON
  • I am required to pitch my ideas in front of an audience
  • the pitch ideas must be for a new online and print based magazine
  • must produce original content
The implicit demands are points the brief is implying and you are not being specifically asked, which includes;

  • London having a developing vibrant music scene, suggests the magazine should be aimed at the younger population of London. As vibrant music is described as rapid, rhythmic produced as a result of vibration; resonant or resounding: vibrant voices.
  • the planning must include a variation of mediums such as notes, audio commentary and photographs as evidence for the progression and development of the production.
  • you must come up with three ideas before choosing one of them as the final pitch.

First thoughts for possible ideas:
In the mind map above there are many different components that go into pre-planning in magazine production.  In order to decide what genre I wanted to base my magazine on,I felt it would be beneficial to decide on music venues first as that would create the body for my magazine, as many small venues around North London focus on specific genres in music. In order to decide on indie rock music I decide to chose a venue in Camden as that's where quite a lot of music happens. In this area there are lots of different music venues that cater to the likes of punk rock, all different indie genres and acoustic pop. Once the genre was chosen, I decided to use the colour schemes of the indie bands that I was focusing on, such as Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks who use rather mellow colours. On the other hand fonts were a different story, as the ones above in the mind map were ones I did not use as they are rather basic fonts and the fonts I used were downloaded from dafont.com.

 Three key Ideas:

Idea 1: Genre
For my magazine the genre is going to be indie/acoustic (also often referred to as the alternative genre)as I feel that this is an up and coming genre that can be interpreted in many ways by each person, making it a very powerful Also many festivals are a composition of indie rock bands such as Arctic Monkeys, however only a small percentage of those bands have originated from North London. My idea for genre is to inform people of all ages (who enjoy music)living in North London of the less well known artists and the genre in which they categorise in. Genre can be defined as a style or category of art, music or literature. Similarly, I chose this genre based on the client brief as it says I need to produce "a music magazine for North London, as there is a vibrant music scene developing locally" - In my opinion I took this to mean the independent music scene as its already existing but it doesn't carry as much popularity as pop music does. The goal for my magazine will be revamping the meaning of this genre and opening it up to as many people as possible. On the other hand, there are also some different genres that prove to have a gap in the music market, such as drill, opera and ska. However I believed indie music scene to be the most successful and have the biggest target audience, and as I am also a fan of indie music, choosing this music scene gives me a greater advantage at collating the most data for my magazine.

Idea 2: Artist
The unique selling point of my magazine is going to be based around the artists who created music an originated from North London, such as David Bowie and Queen. As music they created was alternative/ indie rock music in the eras where pop music was more uncommon than indie music, in contrast to nowadays where pop is the classic radio music. But then I would also include new up and coming artists and how they continue to create music in the same way, with information about performances around north London. my aim is not to have one specific artist, but to have a few that differ to each other, yet are in the same genre of music. The artists I have included in my mood board are all indie rock performers and have been popular or in the charts at least once in their careers. However they do contrast as there are music legends such as Queen, but then there's Lewis Capaldi, who is a fairly new artist rising to the north London music scene.

Idea 3: Venue

My aim for the magazine is to inform readers of where they can enjoy affordable concerts within North London.
My magazine will also advise readers where they can save money, yet enjoy a fully immersive music experience. For example the magazine could explore Wembley areas against Wembley stadium, discussing the pros and cons of each,

In terms of venues, I want to include several North London venues that are available to people of all financial abilities- such as the O2 forum Kentish Town, which hosts a lot of music events as well as comedy events.
The ticket prices range, based on the performer and demand of tickets, however the most a ticket would cost is about £30. I feel that by having cheaper tickets it encourages people to go to performances, even if said performer does not interest them a lot, my aim here is to ensure that the less popular genre of music is still a part of modern day music. This would appeal to my target audience of 16-19 as they would be able to afford this concert price, along with the magazine (monthly cost of £3.50). Additionally, the NUS student discount code offers 10% off of a lot of varied concerts and gigs, so this would in turn save money for my readers.
As O2 forum Kentish Town has a capacity of 2,300 people, it is where new artists often start out, or where popular artists hold small intimate concerts. This creates a great party atmosphere for music performances- ensuring everyone gets their moneys worth.

Conclusion:
In conclusion I have chosen to do my pitch on venues, as I can expand on venues whilst also bringing points from my other ideas on artists and genre. Based on this, I can use the venue timetables to learn about unknown artists who are rising into the limelight, and how they tour certain venues that can help them to gain fans or advertising. Moreover I will include articles about how certain venues only go for one genre of music and how they only allow up and coming artists to perform there, excluding some performances from popular artists- as many artists enjoy performing in small venues as its a more intimate concert.
