Learning Outcome 4 (U3): Be able to carry out post-production techniques and processes for an original media product to a client brief (P5)

LO4: P5 (U3) Be able to carry out post-production techniques and processes for an original media product to a client brief.

front cover:

In order to begin making my front cover, I first had to get the chosen photo from my camera onto the Mac and then download it so that I could access it in photoshop at its prime quality. I then unlocked the layer so that I could add things onto it - such as title, strap lines and tag lines.

Secondly, I inserted font from dafont.com in the style bad signal, it inserted in the colour black, which didn't feel right with the vibrant background so I changed the colour to yellow which works better with the background.

I then used the stroke tool on the font to create a drop shadow around the title to make it bolder.

Next, i flipped the background image so that the model is on the right side of the page, rather than the right- by doing this, it allows for more space on the left that can be used for tag lines, band names and venue names. I also added two strap lines at both the top and bottom of the page. They are using the font lemon/milk and are in all caps to pull the reader in.

Once i flipped the main picture, i then began to add in all the features of a magazine front cover, such as; barcode, issue number, date and branding.

The cover is slowly beginning to come together, to then add to this process, i added in a red puff on the right-hand side of the page. The puff reads as " free tickets for the lock tavern inside", which links back to the client brief.

Moreover, i then added in the background boxes that the cover lines will be put on- this is to give the wording a plain background so that it is eligible to readers.

I then filled in the boxes with the names of bands/artists who are up and coming in the world of indie music.

Penultimately i added my main story cover line across the middle of the page so that readers can see the subject of what's inside the magazine. Similarly the cover line is also in the same font as the strap lines with a stroke outline in black to really make it stand out on the page.

Finally, the last detail that needed to be added was the price- as its essential that buyers are aware of the price before purchasing the magazine.

double page spread:

The photo feature for the double page spread of this magazine will be an original piece that has been taken by me. The images focus on the natural light and urban lifestyle of north London. As the images were captured the camera lens focus was enhanced to apply additional lighting that will help to compliment the authenticity of the photos.

To begin with my double page spread, i first had to get the picture from my camera onto photoshop.
once the photo was on photoshop i started to think about i could put an article on this background so that it was clearly eligible for readers. Then i made sure to find the direct centre of the page so that I'm aware of where exactly the page folds inwards.

Next, i decided to place a plain navy blue background on the left side of the double page so that the main body is clearly legible to the readers, it also contrasts nicely with the blue in the photo.

I then added in the title for my interview. This font is the same font as the main title on the front cover, the fonts will be repeated in use to keep the amount of fonts limited to 3 in total on both the front cover and double page spread. Similarly it sets the overall tone of the magazine by using one font for all the main titles. The font used is called bad signal - downloaded from dafont.com.

thirdly, I added the second main title for the right side of the page to show who the featured artist is. This font uses the stroke effect to give it a the white writing a black outline. Using this font makes the  artist name stand out agains the background as it also includes writing.

Once the title was in place I could then insert the body copy onto the left page. The body copy features an introduction into what the magazine is about, and an exclusive interview with the featured artist. All together I layed the text out as columns as it is a more aesthetically pleasing way of reading text and it allows for more space on the page.

Next I added a pull quote that was said by the Artist during the interview. This quote has been taken from the interview with the artist. I decided to put this quote on the right page alone because it is very powerful and inspirational, hopefully most of the readers will listen to the wise words. Similarly by having it on a page with less writing, the naked eye should be drawn to it.

Finally I added in the last details - page numbers. And now the double page spread is complete.

Target audience review:

For my magazine I have both a primary and secondary target audience simply because the target audience for indie music is quite broad and the music can appeal to anyone due to the many different styles and categories within the genre. In my initial proposal I stated that the primary target audience was 16-19 years old. I was focusing on people who were arty and at the edges of society who dressed in the "skater" style, I also specified that they should be British white males and residents to north London. My secondary target audience was 20-25 year olds who enjoy live music.

The strengths of my front cover in appealing to the target audience is that the artist himself is the same demographic - 17 years old, British white male living in North London. I asked him to dress in casual clothing - hoodie, jeans and bomber jacket, I felt that this corresponded to the casual clothing worn by skaters. I chose Camden as the location for the shoot; this are is associated with the fringes of society so I feel this also fitted with the target audience. The same strengths exist for the double page spread as its also shot in Camden so the mise-en-scene is very similar.

I feel that the magazine worked well for the primary audience, though not so well for the secondary audience, additionally in hindsight I think that maybe my target audience was too narrow which would reduce the readership and revenue for the magazine. In future I envisage broadening the appeal  to incorporate females, different races and ethnicities, and perhaps a slightly older secondary audience. I would still like to retain the North London look and would achieve this by shooting in similarly iconic areas such as Kentish Town, Highbury and Islington and Finsbury Park.
